Education - BA(hons) in Media & Production Design
1979 - 1984 College
A one year Foundation Course at Medway College of Design, followed by a four
year sandwich course at the London College of Printing. Including seven months
practical experience. I worked with DP Press in Sevenoaks gaining experience in
publishing, primarily of educational material. I then worked with Field Wylie
& Company, in Soho, who gave me a broad experience in such things as packaging,
brochures and corporate identity. I also extended the attachment into the
summer.
Employment - from junior designer to associate director
1984 - 1990 Field Wylie & Company
I started working for Field Wylie & Company on leaving college. I began as a junior working with both Alan Field
and John Wylie, involved in all aspects of the business and worked mainly for
our major clients in the toy and travel business.
1986 The Page Factory
I became involved with The Page Factory at its inception, a design production
company specialising in volume print; brochure design and production having
become my area of expertise in the preceding two years. I set up the work
stations and systems and followed through with three months work, producing two
large (500+ pages) brochures for Thomson Holidays.
I returned to Field Wylie as a senior designer and associate director and
continued to work on a wide range of projects. I interviewed and appointed my
own assistants. I then became Design
Co-Ordinator, concentrating on client liaison and concepts. I worked with all
the designers in the studio and was also responsible for the very successful
student attachment programme.
1991 Field Thomson & Company
Following the company's entry into the Cam Galaxy Group we faced the effects of
the recession with a smaller team. I was doing everything from answering the
phone to handling complete design projects. This experience stood me in good
stead when I first started working on my own.
1991 - today Freelance
On the closure of Field Thomson's London office I decided to go it alone. I have
continued with a broad range of work. I work directly with clients but also
with design and advertising agencies, either as a supplier of a total design
service or as an addition to an in-house team under pressure from time or
expertise.
